You just found out you are pregnant and have lots of questions – this is normal! It is important during this time to have reliable information which is why The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada put together this website to help answer your questions (PregnancyInfo.ca). And of course at any time talk to your health care provider.
What to expect during your pre-natal appointments
During your first pre-natal appointments your doctor will obtain your full medical history and do a physical exam. Bloodwork and an ultrasound will most likely be ordered.
Each subsequent visit your weight and blood pressure will be monitored. The fetal heart rate will be listened for around 14 weeks in the office (prior to this the fetus is deep within the pelvis making it difficult to find the heart beat).
Starting around 20 weeks your belly will be measured to ensure the fetus is growing appropriately.
Prenatal Vitamins
It is important to be taking a pre-natal vitamin which contains folate. Folate helps prevent neural tube defects when taken prior and during the first 3 months of pregnancy.
Nausea and Vomiting
Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy can be very challenging. Visit this link for information from the society of obstetricians and gynaecologists of Canada for recommendations.
Prenatal Screening
Prenatal screening is offered in the first trimester to determine the risk of certain genetic abnormalities including Down’s Syndrome and Trisomy 18. This website can provide some information and be sure to discuss further with your health care provider to determine which testing is right for you.
Prenatal Classes + Hospital Information
As your pregnancy progresses, it can be helpful to prepare for birth and the newborn stage. Halton offers online prenatal classes you and your partner can watch from home. If you are delivering at Halton Health Care this site has information on what to bring to the hospital, breast pump rental services and where they are located!
Cord Blood Program
When you are delivering there will be an option for cord blood collection – this is blood taken from the umbilical cord which can be stored for use of stem cells for certain medical conditions. This service is not OHIP covered. Please talk to your provider to find out if this is something your family should consider.
